Big day for Boise: Fitzpatrick 3-peats, boys and girls win
Kinsey Gomez 18:09.41 romps in 5A, Emily Nist leads NW#10 BK girls in 4A

It was deja vu in Idaho, where rewinds of 2008 individual battles found Eric Fitzpatrick repeating his '08 victory over Cody Helbling, but Kinsey Gomez flipped the order on '08 champ Liz Brandon with her victory Saturday. - Photos by Gregg Mizuta

Team Champs:
  • 5A - Boise boys 53 over Coeur d' Alene 83; Boise girls 57 over Mountain View 62
  • 4A - Twin Falls boys 55 over Hillcrest 71; Bishop Kelly girls 36 over Hillcrest 88
  • 3A - Sugar-Salem boys 63 over Teton 70; Timberlake girls 84 over Gooding 97
  • 2A - Soda Springs boys 87 over Firth 91; Soda Springs girls 46 over New Plymouth 94

Class 5A Highlights
  • Two-time defending champ Eric Fitzpatrick took the day's best race, meeting 2008 FL finalist Cody Helbling in a long-anticipated rematch from last year's 5A state meet, and again topping the Lake City senior, 16:01.86 to 16:02.59.  Fitzpatrick's 1-point starter led his NW bubble team Boise to a surprisingly comfortable win, with 53 points over Coeur d' Alene (83) and Eagle (94).
  • The Boise girls, also a NW bubble team, made it a clean sweep, scoring a close 57-62 victory over US#31/NW#4 Mountain View.  Key to the Boise victory was the 3-4 finish by Kate Jamboretz (18:56.87) and Michelle Hickerson (19:15.45), both fronting Mountain View's #1 runner, Kelli Ellingson (5th at 19:18.35).
  • 2007 girls champ Kinsey Gomez (Coeur d' Alene jr) reclaimed that title from the girl who took it from her in '08, turning back Eagle senior Liz Brandon with a sterling 18:09.41 effort which was not only the day's fastest, but also more than 30 seconds up on Brandon's 18:42.85 runner-up finish.
Class 4A Highlights
  • 2008 5A champs Twin Falls boys stepped down a classification but didn't miss a beat, winning the 4A race with 55 points over Hillcrest's 71.  Soph Erik Harris led the Twin Falls effort with his 16:32.45 runner-up finish behind Wood River senior Chase Caulkins' impressive 16:15.28 winner.
  • Sophomore Emily Nist defended her 2008 title with an 18:20.85 victory over Century freshman Hannah McInturff (18:51.28), and led her NW#10 Bishop Kelly girls to the top of the podium with a slim 36 points to Hillcrest's 88.  Their 19:39.26 team average and 1:38:16 total time was nearly identical to 5A team winner's Boise.
Class 3A Highlights
  • Defending boys' champ Ryan Jaggi and 2008 girls' runner-up Marquita Palmer provided an individual sweep for Weiser, with Jaggi's 16:30.77 again topping '08 second-placer Mike McHan (Gooding -16:37.49), and Palmer's 19:47.26 enough to defeat Salmon's Alice Keller in 19:49.59.
  • The Sugar-Salem boys flipped the script on the 2008 results, topping defending champs Teton, 63-70.
  • Timberlake followed ninth grader Ashley George's third place, 20:26.31, effort to an 84-97 win over Gooding.
Class 2A Highlights
  • The finish of the boys individual race mirrored the team outcome, as Soda Springs senior Kasey Meyers' 16:26.89 toppling of defending champ Caden Portela (16:59.19) set the tone for a Soda Springs 87-91 triumph over Portela's Firth squad, also attempting in vain to defend their '08 title.
  • The Soda Springs girls made it a 2A sweep, placing all five scorers in the top 20 for a comfortable 46-94 margin over New Plymouth.
  • New Plymouth's Natalie Evans guaranteed the school would still be represented atop the podium with a 19:56.41 individual win which turned back Butte's Carly Hansen (20:07.65).
